Carts of Darkness

This is a very inspiring documentary film by a paralyzed film director, Murray Siple. Murray Siple's feature-length documentary follows a group of homeless men who have combined bottle picking with the extreme sport of racing shopping carts down the steep hills of North Vancouver.

This subculture depicts street life as much more than the stereotypes portrayed in mainstream media. The film takes a deep look into the lives of the men who race carts, the adversity they face and the appeal of cart racing despite the risk.

These men have taught him a variety of things from general life to the shopping cart techniques. I have only realised that the paralyzed person was Murray himself when I went to research more about him. I have found some information about him that may interest you, it's right below this video.

Film has scene with vulgarities, viewers discretion is advised. But it's a really really good documentary, try not to give this one a miss.

Taken from rabble

A dream life was destroyed in 1996 for Murray Siple, North Vancouver resident thrill-seeker and photographer. A natural athlete who spent his youth as a quarterback, mountain biker, snowboarder and sport filmmaker, Siple's fast-forward life in motion was abruptly halted when he was involved in a car accident rendering him a quadriplegic.

For eight years he did not pick up a video camera. Then one day, Siple decided to say hello to the homeless men he always saw in the parking lot of his local grocery store, dropping off their empty bottles for money.

"They were immediately accepting of me," recalls Siple, whose curiosity would bloom into a full-scale National Film Board production, Carts of Darkness (2006), which recently screened at the 2008 Hot Docs Festival in Toronto in April.

Siple says Big Al's parents were in tears after the screenings. Since those showings, Al has gone back to live with his family, quit the drink and also stopped collecting bottles.

"That's such a reward," says Siple. "Al still rides carts and he calls me about three times a week."

Fergie is in a homeless shelter: "Hopefully, we can encourage him to put the bottle down."

There are so many climate problems that plagued the Earth today. This might not affect us very drastically in the near future. But in a few centuries time, we may very well destroy our one and only home, Planet Earth. Here in this documentary, Sir David Attenborough discusses about several climate issues.

Green house gases(mainly carbon dioxide) - Every year we add 25 billion tons of green house gases to the atmosphere, that might not seem much but in numerical form it's 25, 000, 000, 000, 000 kg . One thing that astounded me is that a single car releases 10 tons of Carbon Dioxide ever year with regular usage.

Rising Temperature - Forest fires are common in Australia, but what has changed today is that the fire are larger and much more agitated as compared in the past. These forest fires become harder to control and are very unpredictable.

The rising temperature also poses another problem, melting of the Ice on our poles. This in effect, rises the sea level to a new high. In fact, some cities that are close to sea levels have resorted to building walls specially meant to block water from coming in.

These are just some of the climate impact that we human are contributing. With the rising population, it is really inevitable that more damage will be done to our Earth.

The final segment discusses several ways that we can reduce our carbon emission from simple solutions such as making some small changes in our household. And also producing alternative energies that releases no carbon dioxide. It's quite shocking to know that all our appliances on 'Standby' Mode accounts for 1/10th of the energy that our household consume.

ps. I've immediately switch my tv's power source off after the segment on reducing carbon dioxide emission!

Burma is a country that faces constant Civil War and political distress. But something is more astounding, children in Burma are exploited to fight in the Civil war. There is an estimated 70,000 children fighting for the war. Many of these children do not grow up knowing anything except to fight for War.

There are no specialized equipments nor clothing for these children. What they wear and use are passed down from dead soldiers, which means they wear really huge clothes. It's really a sad plight to be in, watch this short video to learn more about Burma and the children there.

I watched these series of documentary over the television a few years back, and I like it very much. Tried so hard to find it but i couldn't remember the title. But thankfully, after watching some of the clips on my phone yesterday, I realised they were right beneath my nose.

This is a 6 part series of documentary that focuses on Animal's weird and strange beheaviors. From mating, feeding to consumption of certain plants that causes psychedelic effects and many other stuff. Really interesting and eye opening.

Pumping Iron with Arnold

Arnold Schwarzenegger, besides being known for his role in action films, is also one of the most incredible bodybuilder of all time. In fact, he was on the top of the league during his time in the 60's and 70's, basically beating everyone hands down.

It's such a shame that beauty does not last forever, Arnold is now defeated by his age and reduced to chunky flesh and loose skin.

Nonetheless, his glorious past will always be remembered in the form of pictures and video. Check out the video below to learn more about Arnold. It's interesting to know that he was taught how to pose by a ballet dancer.

Nubia,known as Sudan now, is one of the largest country in the Africa Continent. Sudan is located right on the South of Egypt on the map but is comparatively less known.

However, this was not the case thousands of years ago. Sudan, known as Nubia then, was a powerful nation. They traded with the Egyptians but also waged wars with them. The Nubians excelled in architecture, design and they have 3 times as many Pyramids as Egypt. Learn more about this once powerful country by watching the clip below.

Dragonflies are capable of flying up to 60km/hr in any direction, even backwards. They are the masters of Aeronautical manoeuvre. One would describe them to have the ability to move around like a Helicopter but with the speed of a Jet Aircraft.

Here I have some amazing pictures of the Birds of Paradise taken from National Geographic and various sources. They are a collective group of birds that has stunning decorations on their body. These birds are only found in Papau, New Guinea. Featured right below is a documentary by Sir David Attenborough about these birds.

They developed such displays for only one main reason, to attract their mates. Theoretically, they make an easy prey because of their obvious colours and decoration. But here in New Guinea, there are no large mammals nor larger birds that would otherwise feed on them.

This was the case for couple of thousand of years, but fairly recent human invasion into the island has led to the decline of the Birds of Paradise population. Their feathers are good for decorations purposes and they're only too easy to spot. Watch the clip below to find out more about them.

Tigers

Tigers are native to the South and East of Asia. They can grow up to 4 metres (13 ft) in length and 300 kilograms(660 pounds) in weight. They are generally solitary and territorial, therefore requires huge amount of spaces to have enough preys to hunt.

Out of the Eight species of Tigers, Six are already extinct. The remaining Tigers are also facing the threat of extinction. This is due to the continually destruction of their habitats and the fur industries which hunt them for their fur.

According to a poll by Animal Planet, the Tiger is the world's favourite animal. 21% of the 50,000 people polled Tiger, beating the dog's poll of 20% narrowly. We must protect these last remaining species should we want our future generations to have a chance to see this beauty.

Cassowary - The world's most dangerous bird

The Cassowary is a large flightless bird native to the forest of New Guinea. The most obvious feature of the Cassowary would be the mixture of different tones of blue and red color on its head.

The female Cassowaries are slightly larger than the male, an average female would weight 58.5Kg(129lb) and stand at 1.5m to 1.8m(5 ~ 6ft). They're the second largest bird in the world and has such powerful legs that can cause fatal injuries. In fact, the 2007 version of the Guiness book of world record list the Cassowary as the world's most dangerous bird.

Ice Hotel

The Ice Hotel of Sweden is the biggest hotel in the world that is built entirely by ice and snow. This hotel is the brainchild of two close friends who are specialized in Ice architecture, Arne Bergh and Ake Larsoon.

Situated near the North Pole, the hotel covers and area of 6000 sq metres and requires 300 tons of ice to build. When completed, the hotel features a bar, church, main hall, reception area and rooms and suites for over 100 guests to sit and sleep on blocks of sculpted ice in the form of chairs and beds. Beside the hotel, a chapel will be built also entirely by ice and snow.

This hotel can only be built at the temperature of -5 to -10 degrees celcius. What makes it challenging is that there will only be 6 weeks to build the entire hotel and this process will be done every year.

Rhinoceros

In the plains of Zimbabwe, Africa, lives a ferocious plant eater, the Black Rhinoceros. They were once feared by humans, so they prospered in that land. Nothing can come close to them because they are prepared to charge with a sharp horn and fast speed.

All these changed when rifles come into place. Once living in their hundreds on the plains of Zimbabwe, they are sadly reduced to a figure of 16. Illegal poaching for the horns of these superweight creatures are leading them to extinction. Their horns are valued for the medicinal properties in some cultures.

With the rate of poaching, the Black Rhino will be extinct from the land in a year. Watch as the rescuers from the nature reserve save them and fly them over to Australia where these creatures will stay until the conditions are better back home in Africa.

This documentary is bizarre, I simply cannot comprehend what these guys are thinking. 10 years ago, a small company in California started making real life like dolls for sale. These dolls are more than a sex doll for some of the man who bought them, they develop feelings for these dolls and treated them like they're alive.

The doll's features can be customised and they cost up to 6000USD each. Business has been booming and there are over 3000 dolls shipped worldwide, they get about 400 orders of dolls per year. India is the largest users of crop pesticides, not because they have more farmland but because they use it excessively. Not surprising as they have no governing body for the use of pesticides. With so much pesticide sprayed, guess where it's goes to ultimately? Humans.

Chemical pesticides such as edosulfin is used extensively in a village where Cashew nuts are grown. The use of edosulfin on these Cashew crops has been going on for more than 20 years, and the effects are showing up. The edosulphin is sprayed by a helicopter from the air, thus plenty of the chemical is inhaled and consumed by the villagers there. Villagers have experienced increased number of skin diseases and genetic defects such as mental retardation since the use of edosulfin.

India is one of the largest exporter of cashews, this added to the fact that the pesticide is overused, you can see why India is slowly getting poisoned. The documentary below also discussed other pesticides used such as DDT which is also toxic.

The health conditions of toy manufacturing companies in China is appalling, and this is not limited to the toy sector but throughout all manufacturing plants. Toys that we buy are not cheap, but it sure is cheap to manufacture them in China. That leaves a huge gap, expensive toys that are cheaply produced, so guess who's profiting?

What's worse about this issue is that the companies that orders these toys are not aware of the conditions of the factories. Or rather, they assume all is well and can't be bothered to step in until they're exposed.

These workers are forced to work overtime or else they would not get their monthly wages. In one case, one of them voice out that she has to work 7 days a week with no break and from 6 in the morning till midnight. During the peak where manufacturing contracts flood the factory, they are forced to work till dawn. Imagine that, 6am till to around 3am or 4am, and then you start work at 6am again.

This not forgetting the puny wages that they get from all the work done. 700-800 yuan per month if they work overtime. That is just a meager 100~110 USD. Workers union is a strict no no in the communist state of China, so there is basically no channels to voice out.

This legendary creature of Indonesia sees with it's tongue. Their tongues are 9 inches long and they use it to smell the air for preys. These creatures are carnivorous and can take down animals many times their size. No thanks to the help of their venom. Komodo dragons have poisonous saliva due to bacteria residing in their mouths.

By stealth, they deliver an unforgiving bite onto their victims and wait for it to die slowly as the venom takes over.

Like I always said, losing weight is not difficult at all, maintaining the lost weight is the real challenge. It's a daily struggle, to fight temptation, to stay on the right track and eat healthy. The only solution to those who are obese it to immerse and embed themself into a healthy lifestyle.

You can see many of them regain the lost weight, and the main character in the film, he's back to chips and KFC. I can forsee him gaining back the weight again because he has already given in. Weight loss is an forever issue, our brain regulates the amount of fat they want in our body. To maintain your weight lower, you have to fight against the brain which is constantly probing you to eat. Making you salivate when nice and high caloric food comes along.

Would you believe that coming back to life is possible in the future? These people do and that is exactly why they go through cryogenics when they pass on. Cryogenics is actually a term used for the study of the production of very low temperature. But in this case, it's for freezing up bodies.

So far, there is no way that one can be brought up to life from the dead. But there is a glimpse of hope that in the future, this might be possible. So these people are carefully placed into large metal cylinders that are filled with liquid nitrogen and chemicals that will ensure that cell structures are not destroyed.
